Lydia, a scaled girl who has spent her entire life abused and branded a monster, is forced by imperial decree to marry Alexander — the southern ruler known as the "Monster Admiral." Bracing for his contempt, she is stunned when he looks at her scales and says only this: "Nothing of mine will ever be treated as a monster." For the first time in her life, someone has accepted her exactly as she is. But sleeping within her scales is a secret powerful enough to shake the empire and the seas — and now the Kraken and the creatures of the deep have set their sights on her. As the whole world turns against her, Alexander vows to be her shield until the very end.
