On the day of the wedding, it was not the ailing Owen Langley who held the unity knot with her, but Neil Langley. Owen left behind a divorce letter and passed away. Neil went to the frontier, while Ella Warner stayed behind, raising a little girl and her grandmother-in-law, and set up a tofu pudding stall on the street. Until the war hero returned as a decorated general, determined to marry his widowed sister-in-law. Everyone believed it was out of gratitude—only he knew that in those near-death, freezing nights beyond the border, it was her letters, her hand-stitched knee pads and inner garments that pulled him from the piles of dead and led him home.
