Traded off by my father and grandmother to settle a debt, my battered mother and I were thrown at the feet of Cole Turner—the town’s reclusive, crippled farmer. Rumors swirl that he’s a violent madman who killed his own wife; we braced for the worst, certain we’d stepped into a new hell. But the man we feared mended my mother’s broken arm with gentle hands, gave us a warm home, and shielded us from every cruelty. Is he truly the monster the town paints him to be? What secret hides behind his broke farmer act? And what drove him to wait ten long years, all for a stranger who once gave him a glass of water on a lonely Texas road?
