Layla Valen rose from a scrapyard planet to become valedictorian of the Starfleet Academy, then spent four years as chief tactical officer of the Excalibur — and as Captain Darius’s secret stand-in lover, quietly repaying his sponsorship. When his first love Selena returned, Darius ordered Layla erased. Selena seized her post, ignored every risk warning, and got an entire escort fleet annihilated. To shield Selena, Darius forced Layla to take full blame. She agreed — and with that, wiped the debt clean. At her hearing, instead of confessing, Layla revealed hidden pirate base coordinates and staked her life on an oath to rescue 142 captive officers in thirty days. War hero Orion Thor stormed in, wagering his entire starship Vanguard on her oath. He had been awed by her tactical genius for eight years and had kept the Vanguard’s chief tactical officer seat vacant, waiting only for her. Piloting a shuttle alone through a particle blind zone, Layla tore open the enemy’s rear defense, freed every hostage, and became a legend overnight. Darius, consumed by regret, searched for her for six desperate years — only to find her at a summit as Supreme Commander, married to Orion, with their five-year-old daughter. In a crazed struggle, he accidentally killed Selena and was sentenced to life in prison. On the bridge of the Vanguard, Layla pressed ignition and sailed into the stars.
