Suffering from congenital heart disease, Elena was pushed to the brink of despair. To survive, she married Vincent, the powerful head of a wealthy family who had saved her life, in exchange for a chance at living. However, her wedding day turned into a cruel reunion with Ethan, her first love who had left without a word three years prior. To her shock, Ethan has now become her nominal stepson, bound by strict worldly taboos. Blaming Elena for abandoning him out of vanity and greed three years ago, Ethan harbors deep resentment and misunderstanding. He secretly uses their past romance as leverage to press her relentlessly, constantly pushing her to the edge in their tangled and forbidden entanglement. As their complicated bond unfolds, a series of crises break out one after another: a suspected pregnancy rumor stirs up endless disputes, hidden secrets about Elena’s life experience gradually surface, and vicious schemes framed by other female characters keep plunging her into trouble. All the misunderstandings and persecutations continue to escalate, until Elena’s old heart condition deteriorates severely, leaving her critically ill and hanging by a thread. Faced with the possibility of losing her forever, Ethan finally wakes up to the whole truth of the past. Overwhelmed with boundless regret and remorse, he realizes how wrongly he has judged and hurt the woman he once loved deeply. Trapped between heavy forbidden identities, daunting worldly barriers, and long-buried misunderstandings, the two are caught in an inescapable dilemma. The story lingers on a heartfelt question: can they break free from all shackles, resolve all past grievances, and embrace a happy and fulfilling ending for their tormented love?
