Six years ago, Iris—the heiress to a Texas family that monopolized the oil well equipment industry—rebelled against her father for love, dropped her last name, and ended up living in the suburbs of Houston. She lived in a cramped trailer park, working as a heavy-duty truck mechanic by day and washing sheets by night, surviving on $2 instant oatmeal, and pouring every dollar into her boyfriend Theo’s campaign war chest, single-handedly propelling the small-time hoodlum into a candidate for state representative. During this time, Iris suffered a miscarriage “accident.” She later learned that the miscarriage had been orchestrated by Vanessa, Theo’s mistress. On the eve of the election, to help Theo raise the sponsorship fees for the televised debate, Iris took on an extremely grueling yard tree-trimming job in an affluent Dallas neighborhood. When she walked into the mansion, caked in mud, to ask for water, she stumbled upon a giant engagement photo of Theo and Vanessa, the heiress to a meatpacking tycoon. As Vanessa arrogantly tossed out wads of cash and cruelly flaunted her wealth, Iris pieced together a chilling truth: Theo had not only exploited her to climb the social ladder, but that previous the miscarriage Vanessa had orchestrated was, in fact, a deadly plot that Theo had cruelly condoned in order to climb the social ladder. The very night she lay bleeding heavily and unconscious in the back-alley clinic was the moment Theo had splurged on a lavish proposal to Vanessa. Retreating to the musty tool shed, Iris’s eyes turned as cold as ice. She pulled out her phone with a shattered screen and sent her location to Marcus—the ace political strategist who controlled the lifeblood of Washington’s votes— the man who had stubbornly searched for her for six years and was willing to cross any line for her, as well as to her all-powerful oil tycoon father, Lyle. Just as Theo tried to shove Iris out into the downpour to make way for Washington’s bigwigs, a dozen bulletproof SUVs brutally plowed through the garden. Marcus, accompanied by heavily armed security, kicked in the floor-to-ceiling windows, pressed the barrel of a gun against Theo’s face, and with a backhand slap knocked the screaming Vanessa to the ground, then took off his coat to wrap it tightly around Iris. The tens of millions in political donations Theo thought he’d secured were nothing more than scraps casually tossed by the tycoon to keep his estranged daughter from starving. One phone call, and Theo’s political career went up in smoke. Faced with irrefutable evidence of interstate fraud and first-degree murder, this pair—the hypocritical politician and the vicious heiress—faced severe federal sentences, while Iris shed her weakness entirely, stepped over her enemies’ bones under Marcus’s protection, and coldly took control of Texas’s energy landscape.
