The story unfolds in Boston’s elite shipping circles. The Stewart family monopolizes ports along the East Coast of North America and ocean freight, where high-society marriages are intertwined with business interests, and dark conspiracies—including murder for profit and insurance fraud—lurk within the family. Fifteen years ago, Grace’s father, Edward, died in a shipwreck. As an orphan, Grace was adopted by the matriarch of the Stewart family. Holding the group’s will in her hands, the matriarch used the right of inheritance as leverage to force Julian and Grace to sign a three-year secret marriage contract, which allowed either party to unilaterally file for divorce upon its expiration. Before the wedding, an anxious Grace confided in Julian’s older brother, Harrison, and they embraced—only to be caught by Julian, sowing the seeds of a three-year misunderstanding. After the marriage, Julian inwardly resented the transactional union; he never publicly acknowledged her as his wife, allowing high society to humiliate Grace. Privately, however, he was consumed by possessiveness and confined her in an obsessive manner. For three years, the two tormented each other amid suspicion, emotional abuse, and a constant tug-of-war. On the surface, the story unfolds as a romantic subplot of mutual misunderstandings and a tangled web of love and hate; beneath the surface, it weaves a suspenseful revenge plot: Years ago, Grace’s father uncovered the crime committed by Julian’s uncle Arthur—faking a cargo shipwreck and a false death to claim insurance money. The complete set of evidence is hidden in an abandoned lighthouse in Maine. To cover up the truth, Arthur had Edward killed and has kept the lighthouse under constant surveillance for years. Grace resolves to divorce and travel to the lighthouse to uncover the truth behind her father’s death. On the way, she is ambushed by assassins, but Julian secretly protects her throughout the journey. Along the way, Chloe forges letters to drive a wedge between them, causing Grace to leave home and find work on her own. Later, Harrison returns from abroad and clears up the long-standing misunderstanding, and the two go to court to file for divorce mediation. Ultimately, Grace finds crucial evidence at the lighthouse. Arthur personally leads a group to intercept her and silence her, but Julian confronts him with all the evidence he has gathered over the years. The family’s long-buried sins are fully exposed, and in the face of life-and-death peril, the two set aside their differences, finding both emotional and fateful redemption.
