Lila stood in her couture gown at her engagement dinner, hosted in the Penthouse Suite of The Plaza Hotel. Her fiancé Tristan Vance, in front of a ballroom full of guests, asked her to give up her VIP seat at the main table to his ex-girlfriend Scarlett—because Scarlett suffered from "severe social anxiety" and needed him nearby. At the main table, Tristan's cousins pointed their phones at Lila, waiting to capture the middle-class Cinderella's humiliation. His mother called her petty. His sister called her dramatic. Lila smiled. She turned to her childhood best friend standing beside her: "Didn't you say you needed a marriage of convenience to satisfy your family's trust fund clause? What do you think of me? Let's go register at City Hall right now." His eyes lit up. When the Vance family found out Lila had legally become another man's wife, the ballroom fell silent. They thought she would endure the humiliation. She chose to walk away.
