Marilyn Higgins, a pregnant former special‑effects makeup artist in Seattle, learns that her husband David’s mistress, Jessica Page, has been brutally raped and murdered. David becomes the prime suspect. After questioning, he returns home volatile and accuses Marilyn of the crime, even trying to strangle her. The next morning, Marilyn finds David dead in the living room with his wrists slashed. Police initially rule it a suicide. Detectives Sara Green and Miller Hawes grow suspicious. A neighbour’s doorbell camera shows a ghostly woman in a vintage dress – resembling the dead Jessica – pulling the blinds shut around the time of David’s death. Marilyn, visibly pregnant, denies it’s her. The slim figure in the footage seems to prove her innocence. Soon, David’s coworker Robert claims he has a USB drive with evidence of David’s embezzlement. When Marilyn visits his apartment, Robert confesses to killing both Jessica and David, then rapes her, causing her to lose her baby. Marilyn secretly records his confession and turns it over to the police. Robert and his wife Samantha are arrested and convicted. Marilyn loses her baby and David’s illegal assets. She returns to her SFX makeup career, going viral online. Then she finds a cryptic comment under her video: “With that skill, someone could impersonate anyone and fool the smartest cops, right?” The commenter is Detective Sara Green using a fake account. Sara is still watching her. The truth emerges: Marilyn killed them both. Six months earlier, she discovered David’s affair and his embezzlement. Jessica had taunted her, and David took his mistress’s side. Using her makeup expertise, Marilyn disguised herself as David, entered Jessica’s apartment, and staged the murder. When David turned violent, she drugged his bourbon, dressed as Jessica’s ghost, terrified him, and slashed his wrists – making it look like suicide. The slim figure in the camera footage was real because she had removed her fake pregnancy belly. She then deliberately provoked Robert – a violent criminal – into confessing on tape, even allowing his assault to make her story credible. Robert was the perfect scapegoat. But Sara has traced Marilyn’s purchase of SFX silicone materials. As Marilyn tries to board a flight out of Seattle, Sara and Detective Miller intercept her at the airport, flashing their badges. Marilyn knows there is no perfect crime – only self‑delusion.
