Tong Yao, the eldest daughter of the Tong family, accidentally slept with the male lead Lu Yuanshen after her father's death. The next morning, she was caught by her cousin Tong Rou'er. Tong Rou'er falsely accused Tong Yao of seducing a beggar and disgracing the family, deciding to kill her. However, considering Tong Yao's father's shares, she instead locked Tong Yao in the basement. Tong Rou'er then impersonated Tong Yao to approach the noble male lead Lu Yuanshen, attempting to climb the social ladder by attaching herself to his prestigious status.
