In the rain-shrouded town of Blackwood, Oregon, 24-year-old biology PhD student Elena is forced to be auctioned off at an underground auction house in Portland's docks because her adoptive father has racked up massive gambling debts. The buyer is Alistair Thorne, the owner of an ancient manor deep in the Blackwood forest. The Thorne family operates a multinational timber business, but their true identities are an ancient vampire clan that inhabits the area. The family heir, Alistair, is suffering from "Silver Rot," a disease that is steadily weakening his bloodline. Elena is no ordinary sacrificial offering; she is a rare "living vessel," possessing a unique antibody in her blood that is the only hope for alleviating Silver Rot. The ritual to completely cure the disease requires draining all the blood from her heart. The two sign a one-year blood pact, and Elena is forced to become Alistair's nominal wife. She must endure Alistair's cold and obsessive possessiveness and control, while also guarding against the schemes of Silas, the family's head of internal affairs. Silas, coveting the inheritance, secretly plots to harm Elena, attempting to ruin the ritual and thereby depose Alistair and seize control of the family. Desperate, Elena unexpectedly finds a long-lost formula for a bio-gel in a brass pendant left by her grandmother. This potion can trigger a deep state of suspended animation when the heart is severely damaged, repairing the body's circulatory system. When the scalpel is pointed at her chest during the ritual, this cruel hunt disguised as redemption transforms into a life-or-death gamble for two lonely souls to break free from the shackles of an ancient bloodline.
