Penn Whitlock has been invisible for four years — a big, soft-spoken, quietly funny man four desks from the boss he loves, who has never once looked up, in an office where being kind is read as being furniture and where nobody has ever cared enough to notice he is gay. Then a colleague steals his phone for a joke, puts his private photographs on every screen at the office party, and stands in the wreckage laughing while forty people reach for their own phones; and the CEO who has never learned his name is out in the corridor when Penn comes running out of it, and takes his hand, and gives him the single most beautiful night of his life — before a fiancée walks in the next morning while Penn is still hiding under the desk, and he understands that he was never the secret Harlan Voss was keeping. He was the shape of it. Three years later a man nobody has ever heard of comes down that corridor in oxblood — you hear the boots before you see him — and takes the deal apart in ninety seconds. But the man he came back to destroy has spent every one of those three years looking for someone who vanished, and has been keeping one small gold earring in a safe: real, ruinous, unfinished love — for the one man arrogant enough to have looked straight through him, coward enough to have married a woman for a photograph of a life, and lost enough to be standing in front of him right now, telling him about the person he cannot forget, and not recognising his face.
